Pyramide de Falicon

Just few kilometers hillside from Nice, in Falicon, there is a little known pyramid, called "Pyramide de Falicon". French authorities made it a historic monument in 2007, after long discussions whether the pyramid is really one of the oldest European pyramids. It was discovered in 1804, and was calculated to have been 9 m tall. Now it's fairly small, the top has been truncated at about 3 m. This is one of the very rare pyramids to be found in Europe, and there is no clear explanation for its existence. There are various theories of its origin.  John Ward-Perkins thinks it might have marked the tomb of an ancient chieftain, possibly an exiled Egyptian. Others says, the pyramid was built by Roman legionnaires, and the 50-meter deep grotto was a temple to the Persian god Mithras. According to Wikipedia, "The number of stairs leading into the cave below the pyramid also supposedly corresponds to the 7-level initiation rituals of the cult of Mithras - an eastern religion that was popular with members of the Roman Army during the later Empire. Mindössze néhány kilométerre északra Nizzából, a domboldalon, Falicon mellett, van egy kevéssé ismert piramis, az úgynevezett "Pyramide de Falicon". 2007-ben a francia hatóságok hosszas viták után történelmi emlékművé nyilvánították, mint az egyik legrégibb európai piramis. 1804-ben fedezték fel, számítások szerint 9 m magas volt eredetileg. Manapság sokkal kisebb, a teteje kb 3 m-re le lett csonkolva. Ez egyike az Európában található, nagyon ritka piramisokoknak, létezését illetően nincs egyértelmű magyarázat. Eredetéről különféle elméletek léteznek. John Ward-Perkins szerint, talán egy száműzött egyiptomi ősi törzsfőnök sírhelyét jelöli.Mások szerint a piramist római légiósok épülték, és az 50 méter mély barlang a perzsa Mithrász isten temploma volt . A Wikipedia szerint: "A piramis alatti barlangba vezető több lépcső állítólag megegyezik a 7-szintű rituális kezdeményezéssel a Mithrász-kultuszban, ami egy keleti vallás, amely népszerű volt a római hadsereg tagjai között a késői birodalomban."
