Weekend on the Sea - Hétvége a tengeren

I think regular readers already know that one of my favorite pastime is sailing. This time I would like to show you through video, how I spend a weekend on the sea. In the video is not visible, but for the sake of accuracy I would mention that the port, where we started our trip was Saint-Laurent du Var, which is located near Nice. From there we took the south-west direction, towards Antibes, and then we passed near the island of Saint-Honorat. We continued our journey toEsterelle, which is famous of it's red rocks, toward Théoule-sur-Mer, then in the Bay of  Mandelieu we turned back, passed next to Cannes and Island of Saint-Maurgerite,  headed back to the Bay of Antibes, where we spent the night. The video consists two parts, but I think both are worth seeing, if only because of the beauty of the landscape.

Gondolom, rendszeres olvasóim már tudják, hogy az egyik kedvenc időtöltésem a vitorlázás. Ez alkalommal videón keresztül szeretném bemutatni, hogy telik egy tengeren töltött hétvégém. A videón ugyan nem látszik, de a pontosság kedvéért megemlíteném, hogy a Saint-Laurent du Var-i kikötőből indultunk, ami Nizza mellett található. Onnét dél-nyugatra vettük az irányt, Antibes felé, majd elhaladtunk Saint-Honorat szigete mellett. Tovább folytattuk utunkat a vörös szikláiról híres Esterell felé, érintve Théoule-sur-Mer-t, majd a Mandelieu-i öbölben visszakanyarodtunk, elhajózva Cannes és Sainte-Maurgerite szigete mellett, vissza az Antibes-i öbölbe, ahol az éjszakát is töltöttük. A videó két részből áll, de véleményem szerint érdemes mindkettőt megnézni, már csak a táj szépsége miatt is.

The danger of the Mediterranean - A Földközi tenger veszélyei

The pictures and the video was made in Villefranche, in June 2012, but the sight is similar in the whole French Riviera. To search some food, jellyfishes come closer to the beach, so bathers can meet them more often. What you should know about them?The real test of their constituent cells form tissues, more than 97% water. The cell layers are mezogloea. It contains many mucopolysacharides, it feels like jelly. Their bodies has only one hole, the mouth (intestinal form). The mouth tentacles located on the edge. They eat smaller plankton, the larger species feed on small crabs. The undigested waste products goes through in the same hole, where they eat. The common root-mouthed jellyfish Rhizostoma Pulman (in the pictures, the white color), translucent bell-shaped. The diameter of it sometimes more than 80 cm. They have eight arms, which are is relatively short. For humans, this species is completely harmless.We can't say the same for the slightly pungent, 'purple' light flagellum yellyfish, for the Pelagia noctiluca. In the end of their arms there tiny stinging cells. Thin, but the longer can reach several meters. When it touch the skin, it may cause allergic reactions. The stings, which at first may seem harmless, one hours after can cause a terrible pain. The sting causes sudden rises in blood pressure or stroke, can cause paralysis of the heart. If you experience such bites, come out immediately from the water, it is extremely important that 15 to 20 minutes after the bite, you must recieve some medical help. 

In the end, something else interesting. The ancient Greek myth tells us that the Medusa is a winged virgin, who scares everyone, and lives in the end of the world. The head is like a dragon, instead of hear, she has snakes ont he top of it. Huge tusks comes out of hes mouth, her hands are iron, her wings are gold. By the legend it is believed that anyone who looks into the face of Medusa, becomes a stone. This mythological figure is painted by Rubens, the title of the painting is "Head of Medusa".

A képek és a video Villefranche-ban készültek, 2012 júniusban, de a látvány az egész Francia Riviérán hasonló. A medúzákat élelemkeresési ösztönük a tengerparthoz egyre közelebb hajtja, ezért egyre gyakrabban találkozhatnak vele a fürdőzők. Mit érdemes tudni róluk?

A testüket felépítő sejtek valódi szöveteket alkotnak, több mint 97%-ban vizet tartalmaznak. A sejtrétegek között mezogloea található. Ez sok mukopoliszacharidot tartalmaz, ezért kocsonyás tapintású. Testükön egyetlen nyílás van a szájnyílás (űrbél). A szájnyílás peremén tapogatók helyezkednek el. A kisebbek planktonokkal, a nagyobb fajok kis rákokkal táplálkoznak úgy, hogy karjaikkal vizet áramoltatnak szájnyílásuk felé, beszippantják és kiszűrik a táplálékot. Az emésztetlen salakanyag aztán szintén ezen a nyíláson át távozik. A közönséges gyökérszájú medúza -Rhizostoma pulmo- (a képeken a fehér színű), áttetsző harang alakú ernyőjének átmérője néha a 80 cm-t is meghaladja. Sajátos szerve a karjai összenövésével kialakult szájcsöve, aminek segítségével, nagyobb falatokat is el tud fogyasztani. Nyolc, aránylag rövid karja van. Az emberre ez a faj teljesen ártalmatlan.

Ugyanez nem monható el az enyhén szúrós, "lila színű" világító ostoros medúzára, vagyis a Pelagia noctiluca -ra. Mivel csalánozók, karjaik végén apró csalánsejtek találhatóak. Vékony, de annál hosszabb csápjai, amik elérhetik a több métert is, a bőrfelülettel érintkezve allergiás reakciót válthatnak ki. A csípések, mely eleinte veszélytelennek tűnhetnek, kb. egy óra elteltével görcsöt és iszonyatos fájdalmakat okoznak. A csípés hatására a vérnyomás hirtelen felszökik, akár agyvérzést, szívbénulást is okozhat. Ha ilyen csípést tapasztalunk akkor azonnal jöjjünk ki a vízből, mert rendkívül fontos, hogy a csípést követő 15-20 percen belül orvosi segítséget kapjunk.Végezetül még egy kis érdekesség. A régi görög mítosz azt mondja, hogy a Medúza egy szárnyas szűz, aki mindenkiben félelmet kelt, és a világ végén tanyázik. A feje sárkánypikkelyes, haj helyett kígyók tekergőznek rajta. Szájából óriási vadkanszerű agyarak állnak ki, kezei vasból, szárnyai aranyból vannak. Medúza fogatát egyesek szerint, szárnyas sárkányok vontatták. Úgy tartják, hogy aki a Medúza arcába néz, az kővé válik. Ezt a mitológiai alakot Rubens is megfestette, festményének címe: Medúza fő. 

Invasion of the Valelles

In this time of the year (may), the invasion of the Valelles are quite common in the Mediterranien Sea.

The valelle (Velella Velella) is a Cnidarian class Hydrozoa, which means that her reproductive cycle is polymorphic and therefore has a phase alternating polyp and medusa stage set. The visible part of it's body consists of a disc-shaped float topped with a triangular sail, that allows them to drift, carried by wind and currents. The submerged part carries specialized polyps. It can measure 5 to 6 cm long. Even it looks strange and scary during the invasion,they are not harmful for human.

Ebben az évszakban (május), meglehetősen gyakori a Valelles invázió a Mediterrán tengeren. A valelle (Velella Velella) a Cnidarian Hydrozoa osztályba tartozik, ami azt jelenti, hogy egy reproduktív polimorf ciklussal rendelkezik, egyrészt polip másrészt medúza. Testének látható része egy korong alakú úszó, tetején egy háromszögű vitorlával, ez teszi számukra lehetővé, hogy a szél által sodródjanak. A vízbe merülő részén különleges polipokat lehet látni, ezek által sodródik az áramlattal. Átlagos 5-6 cm hosszú. Különös és félelmetes látványa (invázió alatt)ellenére, nem ártalmasak az emberre.

Sailing boat on the rocks

It has been already two weeks now, that every day there is a 70 to 80 km per hour wind in the French Riviera, which can be either good for sailers. However, such cases everyone should be much mor cautious, even the professionals. If the passengers of the boat in the pictures and in the video they were or not, I do not know. It seems to me that they were not. First of all, in this wind, they shouldn't sail out, even if the waves are not that huge. The situation is different for a catamaran or for the windsurf. What really happened, I do not know. What is sure, that the boat was drifting in the sea and ended up on the rocks, because of the wind. It could have been prevented if they use the engine (if it's working), or if they open the wings (if they know how to use it), or simply they could thrown out the hook until some help is coming. They could do that, since near the coast the sea is not as deep. Of course, the point is that no one was hurt and the boat escaped unharmed.

Már 2 hete minden nap 70-80 km per órás sebességű szél fúj itt a Francia Riviérán, ami akár kedvező is lehet a vitorlázás szerelmeseinek. Azonban ilyen esetben sokkal elővigyázatosabbnak kell lenni, még a profiknak is. Hogy a képeken és a videón szereplő hajó utasai azok voltak-e, azt nem tudom. Nekem úgy tűnik, hogy nem. Először is ilyen szélben, nem ésszerű ilyen vitorlással kihajózni, mégha a hullámok nem is olyan nagyok. Más a helyzet egy katamarán vagy egy windsurf esetében. Hogy valójában mi történt, azt nem tudom. Az biztos, hogy a hajó a szél és a sodrás következtében a szikákon kötött ki. Mindez megelőzhető lett volna, ha használják a motort (persze csak ha működik), vagy a vitorlát (ha tudja, hogy kell használni), vagy egyszerűen csak kidobják a horgot, és lehorgoznak addíg, amíg segítség nem jön. Mindezt megtehették volna, mivel part közelében nem annyira mély a tenger. Persze a lényeg, hogy senkinek nem esett baja, és a hajó is épségben megmenekült .

Bay of Villefranche - A Villefranch-i öböl

Villefranche sur Mer is one of the most charming authentic French and Niçoise fishing village on the French Riviera, in the heart of the Cote d’Azur.
The Bay of Villefranche, reputed as one of the five most beautiful bays in the world, is embraced by the Cap of Nice on the right and Cap Ferrat on the left. The charming Old Town of Villefranche cascades down the hillside to the sea, and the sandy kilometer-long beach offers great recreation throughout the year. From the map you can see that Old Nice is just 3 kilometers away, Monaco is 7, Nice airport is 10, Antibes is 15 kilometeers away, and Juan les Pins and Cannes just beyond that. St Paul de Vence, Vence and Grasse are also just a few kilometers, and the border to Italy just 15 kilometers. There is so much to do here it is hard to know where to start. Maybe you want to just relax, enjoy the beach, sit in a café or bar and take in the beautiful scenery and fun scene. Or maybe you want to enjoy the French lifestyle, cuisine, delicious produce and wine, shop in the local markets, live the village lifestyle — and get healthier and trimmer while eating and drinking to your hearts content. Or maybe you want to do some sightseeing and take in some of the magnificent walks and sites the area has to offer. I like to sail there and spend a few days in the bay on our boat, swim a bit, fish a bit, visit the old town, some restaurants, and wake up early to see the magnificent sun rise.

Van, aki a városnézést választaná, és az sem unatkozna, aki szeret hatalmas sétákat tenni, hiszen ez a hely rengeteg látnivalót kínál. Mivel én szeretek vitorlázni, összekötöm a kellemeset a hasznossal, és néha eltöltök néhány napot az öbölben, úszom egy kicsit, pecázok egy kicsit, sétálgatok az óvárosban, élvezem a finom francia ételeket egy-egy éttermekben, és próbálok korán felébredni, hogy láthassam a csodálatos napfelkeltét.
